Step 1. First, before you start installing any package on your Ubuntu server, we always recommend making sure that all system packages are updated.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Step 2. Install the Java Development Kit on the Ubuntu system.

NetBeans IDE requires Java 8 or later Java Development Kit installed on your system. Run the following command below to install it:

sudo apt install default-jdk

To verify the version of the installed Java development kit, run the command below:

java -version

Step 3. Install Netbeans on Ubuntu system.

  • Install NetBeans on Ubuntu using Snap

Run the following command to install Netbeans IDE:

sudo snap install netbeans --classic
  • Install NetBeans on Ubuntu using NetBeans installer script:

Navigate to the Apache NetBeans downloads page and grab the installer script for Linux:

wget https://downloads.apache.org/netbeans/netbeans/12.2/Apache-NetBeans-12.2-bin-linux-x64.sh
sudo sh Apache-NetBeans-12.2-bin-linux-x64.sh

Step 4. Running Netbeans IDE on Ubuntu.

Once the installation is done, NetBeans should now be available among your system applications. You will see the NetBeans launcher icon like the below screenshot. Click on the launcher button to start:
